micro peel vs microdermabrasion
do you really know the difference?
Words by Tanya Grimson
February 28th, 2017
There is always a lot of talk surrounding skin peels and microdermabrasion when it comes to beauty but there is also a degree of confusion in regards to what both treatments actually entail. This is accompanied by trepidation and fear stemming from the word ‘peel’, as flashbacks of Samantha in Sex and the City with her burning skin come to the fore of your mind. Does beauty really come at such a price? With that in mind, we figured the only way to find out the real truth behind the processes was to try them out for ourselves and see if these processes are something we should approach with caution or if they have been harshly judged without real substance. And of course, what really is the difference between the peel and microdermabrasion?
Not wanting to opt for any beauty boutique, we decided to work with Renew Clinic due to the calming fact that the founders and technicians are registered medical nurses who know what they are doing. Note of advice, never ever proceed with an unregistered practitioner without medical expertise, even if they have a good deal on, as this could ultimately result in your loss as you rectify whatever damage may have been done to your skin. So, myself and maven46 co-founder, Agata (who I have to admit was little braver than me) decided to test both treatments and compare the processes and results so you too can have a real life experience of the truths, the myths and the reality.

Facial peels in Dublin that won’t leave you red-faced
Facial peels aren’t as scary as they sound. If you have that Sex and the City scene in your mind, the one where Samantha’s face resembles a disintegrating tomato, you need a little updating.
Peels these days come in varying strengths and can be personalised to your skin’s needs. They work by chemically exfoliating the first few layers of your skin, and revealing the younger skin beneath. Fine lines and pigmentation exist on these few layers, so you remove a few of those too (if you that is something that matters to you).
Jeanette from Renew was interviewed by the Sunday Independent in regards to the use of Lip Filler. Click here to read the full article.
Jeanette Dunne is the co-owner of Renew Aesthetic Clinic and a registered nurse. While beauty is her business, she says she must have a genuine reason to put filler in someone’s face. “It’s a moral obligation. If a young girl comes in with full and proportionate lips, I won’t fill them.”
Dunne is also concerned that we’ve yet to see the long-term implications of over-filling lips at a young age. “It could have an impact on the tissue, there are a lot of sensory nerves around the mouth.
“When someone comes in to me, I tell them about the things that can happen, from a blocked artery to an allergic reaction or necrosis of the tissue. This is rare, but it can happen, especially if the product is in inexperienced hands.”
With Celeb fans including Kim Kardashian and Bar Refaeli and Anna Friel, the spooky-sounding Vampire Facial or more accurately, PRP Procedure (Platelet Rich Plasma) appears to be a blood thirst affair? Click the image to read the full article.

Ultherapy is a non-surgical ultrasound treatment that stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin deep within the skin. It gradually lifts and sculpts the skin from the inside out without surgery or downtime, and is tried and tested for use in the upper and lower face, neck and décolletage.
It is scientifically proven to stimulate new collagen and elastin which can reverse the signs of ageing. It creates a lift that can last for over a year and the treatment only takes between 60 and 90 minutes with no downtime.
It has also been tried and tested by our own Lorraine Keane at Renew Aesthetic Clinic and you can follow her own experience on the treatment below.

Acne scars are a result of inflamed blemishes, caused by skin pores being blocked with excess oil and bacteria. Skin will try to heal these lesions by forming new collagen fibres, which usually less smooth than the natural skin. Picking and squeezing spots will increase risk of scarring. The first step in treatment is to clear skin of any active acne. Topical home care and/or peels, in the weeks prior to treating scars is essential to ensure full clearance. Active ingredients, such as Salicylic acid, Retinol, Benzyl Peroxide, will all help in the reduction of active acne. Ensure a consultation with a skin health expert to ensure correct treatment for your skin type. As always, it is essential to protect your skin from environmental damage with the use of antioxidants and SPF.Once the active problem is under control, you can begin treating the scars.
TREATMENT OF SCARS
Microneedling uses tiny microfine needles which penetrate skin, causing a tiny injury. This in turn encourages your skin to create a healing response, producing collagen and elastin, to heal this injury. This results in smoother skin, even skin tone and reduction in pore size. Overall, the texture will be smoother, the added benefit of reduction in fines lines and anti ageing being a bonus.
Benefits: improvement in texture and tone. Reduction in scars and fine lines.
Recommend treatments: 3-6 treatments depending on severity of scars and desired outcome.
Treatment timeline: treat 3-6 weeks apart.
Visible results: approx 3-6 weeks after 1st treatment.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP can be used on its own, or in conjunction with Microneedling.
PRP uses a natural component of your own body to promote skin rejuvenation.
A small sample of blood is taken from your arm (just like a normal blood test). The blood is put in a centrifuge and 10 minutes later the plasma has separated from the whole blood and is ready for use. This Platelet Rich Plasma can be injected directly into problem areas or can be micro needled into the skin. Sometimes a combination of both is the best option. Again, consultation with your skin health professional will provide you with the best advice.
Benefits: this treatment can help to improve texture, tone, reduce lines and wrinkles and reduce scars.
Recommended treatments: 3-6 treatments, depending on severity of issue and desired outcome.
Treatment timeline: 6 weeks apart.
Visible results: 2-12 weeks post 1st treatment.
TCA peeling uses non toxic crystals dissolved in water to exfoliate deeply in the skin. When TCA is applied to the skin, it causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off, over several days. When the old skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin, which has a smoother texture and more even colour. This treatment is excellent at treating superficial scarring but also the brown/red blemishes that’s can accompany these scars.
Benefits: reduction in pigmentation. Added benefits of improved pore size, fine lines and wrinkle reduction.
Recommended treatments: up to 4treatments, depending on severity and combinations treatments.
Treatment timeline: 4 weeks apart.
Visible results: 2-4 weeks post treatment.
Hope this helps, until next time.

Sun exposure, time, gravity and poor lifestyle choices can all contribute to ageing of the skin. Over time, we lose elasticity and lines and wrinkles appear due to the decline of collagen and elastin in our skin.
How can we treat this?
Ultherapy is a non-surgical ultrasound treatment. It stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin deep within the skin. This reverses the signs of ageing.
How it works: Ultherapy delivers focused ultrasound energy to the same skin depth targeted by surgeons during cosmetic surgery. Ultherapy does not disrupt the surface of the skin or surrounding tissue. The heat energy initiates the bodys own natural response which stimulates the growth of fresh collagen.
Benefits: It is a non- surgical treatment that takes between 60 and 90 mins.
It is proven to stimulate collagen and elastin.
One treatment can create lift that lasts greater than a year in some clients.
Ultherapy is unique as it allows practitioners to see and target the specific area that needs to be treated. Real results appear over a 2-3 month period as new collagen builds. This gradually lifts the skin but some clients have seen an initial lift after their treatment.
Ultherapy is cleared by the FDA in the US and CE mark certified in the EU.
