Acne scars are a result of inflamed blemishes, caused by skin pores being blocked with excess oil and bacteria. Skin will try to heal these lesions by forming new collagen fibres, which usually less smooth than the natural skin. Picking and squeezing spots will increase risk of scarring. The first step in treatment is to clear skin of any active acne. Topical home care and/or peels, in the weeks prior to treating scars is essential to ensure full clearance. Active ingredients, such as Salicylic acid, Retinol, Benzyl Peroxide, will all help in the reduction of active acne. Ensure a consultation with a skin health expert to ensure correct treatment for your skin type. As always, it is essential to protect your skin from environmental damage with the use of antioxidants and SPF.Once the active problem is under control, you can begin treating the scars.

TREATMENT OF SCARS

Microneedling

microneedling-fb

Microneedling uses tiny microfine needles which penetrate skin, causing a tiny injury. This in turn encourages your skin to create a healing response, producing collagen and elastin, to heal this injury. This results in smoother skin, even skin tone and reduction in pore size. Overall, the texture will be smoother, the added benefit of reduction in fines lines and anti ageing being a bonus.

Benefits: improvement in texture and tone. Reduction in scars and fine lines.

Recommend treatments: 3-6 treatments depending on severity of scars and desired outcome.

Treatment timeline: treat 3-6 weeks apart.

Visible results: approx 3-6 weeks after 1st treatment.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Vampire Facelift at Renew Clinic

PRP can be used on its own, or in conjunction with Microneedling.

PRP uses a natural component of your own body to promote skin rejuvenation.

A small sample of blood is taken from your arm (just like a normal blood test). The blood is put in a centrifuge and 10 minutes later the plasma has separated from the whole blood  and is ready for use. This Platelet Rich Plasma can be injected directly into problem areas or can be micro needled into the skin. Sometimes a combination of both is the best option. Again, consultation with your skin health professional will provide you with the best advice.

Benefits: this treatment can help to improve texture, tone, reduce lines and wrinkles and reduce scars.

Recommended treatments: 3-6 treatments, depending on  severity of issue and desired outcome.

Treatment timeline: 6 weeks apart.

Visible results: 2-12 weeks post 1st treatment.

TCA peeling

tca

TCA peeling uses non toxic crystals dissolved in water to exfoliate deeply in the skin. When TCA is applied to the skin, it causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off, over several days. When the old skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin, which has a smoother texture and more even colour. This treatment is excellent at treating superficial scarring but also the brown/red blemishes that’s can accompany these scars.

Benefits: reduction in pigmentation. Added benefits of improved pore size, fine lines and wrinkle reduction.

Recommended treatments: up to 4treatments, depending on severity and combinations treatments.

Treatment timeline: 4 weeks apart.

Visible results: 2-4 weeks post treatment.

Hope this helps, until next time.

Sun exposure, time, gravity and poor lifestyle choices can all contribute to ageing of the skin. Over time, we lose elasticity and lines and wrinkles appear due to the decline of collagen and elastin in our skin.

How can we treat this?

Introducing Ultherapy!

Ultherapy is a non-surgical ultrasound treatment. It stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin deep within the skin. This reverses the signs of ageing.

How it works: Ultherapy delivers focused ultrasound energy to the same skin depth targeted by surgeons during cosmetic surgery. Ultherapy does not disrupt the surface of the skin or surrounding tissue. The heat energy initiates the bodys own natural response which stimulates the growth of fresh collagen.

Benefits: It is a non- surgical treatment that takes between 60 and 90 mins.

It is proven to stimulate collagen and elastin.

One treatment can create lift that lasts greater than a year in some clients.

Ultherapy is unique as it allows practitioners to see and target the specific area that needs to be treated. Real results appear over a 2-3 month period as new collagen builds. This gradually lifts the skin but some clients have seen an initial  lift after their treatment.

Ultherapy is cleared by the FDA in the US and CE mark certified in the EU.

Beauty by Lorna Weightman

Cellulite is horrible isn’t it? Sadly, it’s something our skin seems to be addicted to so we just have to grin and bear it. Or do we? Well my most recent beauty discovery argues to rid us of that yuk wrinkle-like skin on our legs, tummy, arms and even smoothen the skin on your face. Icoone is a machine that does just this. The only machine in Ireland is in Renew Clinic who not only house this miracle machine, but numerous experts in skincare to help you with any skin issue. And I have a few. But I’m starting with cellulite, so Icoone is what I’m going to begin with. So here begins my Cellulite banishing diary with thanks to Renew…

icoone cellulite zapper

Well I started the “Bye Bye Cellulite” project back in May with astounding results very quickly. Since June, it’s been one treatment a week (well almost!) and now after 12 sessions of Icoone, I have smoother skin on every area treated. What I should also explain is that there are 10 levels of the treatment, and when I first started, I was at level 5. Now that my skin is used to the treatment, I am on level 8 (although I think my therapist Kelsey likes to up without telling me, all in the name of effective treatments!) which is fairly intense but gives very quick results. I have noticed significant shrinkage on my thighs especially and since my last measurement they’ve actually gone up an inch, but that’s to do with building muscle in my legs with the amount of training I am doing. And this is exactly what I wanted. A toned, healthy body with skin that looks equally healthy. So next up for me is to get my legs out for an instagram snap. So hopefully weather permitting you can check that out on my Insta this Saturday.

Icoone diary week four: June 28th 2016

This whole thing is starting to take shape, literally. My ass is shaping up to give any of the Kardashian’s a run for their money. Well maybe that’s ambitious but I feel great about my shape now. Over the last three weeks, doing two Icoone sessions per week, I’ve managed to shave off six inches from across my hips and two and a half on my waist. Now I have to say that this treatment needs to be balanced with regular exercise and I have turned into a gym bunny, so with four work outs per week, the whole experiment is proving itself to be worth the effort. Not only that, the texture across my tummy especially is smooth and the appearance of cellulite is pretty much gone. Next up, I’m going to try my upper arms which I didn’t think I could do. Now I spend a lot of time on my arms when it comes to working out, so they are fairly toned. But there is still that yukky bingo wing look that isn’t too noticeable, but I notice it. So in my next update I’ll let you know my progress on that.

Image SPF

I swear by this product and have been using it for years. I’m very conscious of sun damage and always look for products that include SPF. Sometimes people only think this is necessary when on holidays abroad but it’s just as important to use SPF in Ireland. I pick this up in Renew Clinic.

Microdermabrasion

Ok, I’m usually pretty bad at regularly making appointments to get my nails done or my hair etc. I usually always need reminding but one thing I have now made part of my routine is going to get microdermabrasion. Obviously with modelling and doing shows you have to wear a lot of make up the whole time so I was always conscious of my skin and not letting pores get blocked. Like most girls, I’ve gone through periods of bad skin and as much as a healthy diet plays a key part for me and my skin, microdermabrasion has really helped too! If you haven’t heard of it before, microdermabrasion is a cosmetic treatment in which the face is sprayed with exfoliant crystals to remove any dead epidermal cells. I go to Renew Clinic to get mine done.

FACE 2016

This year the Renew Clinic team attended FACE 2016 in London. As always the cream of the dermatology world were there to enlighten us about the latest innovations in the industry. Less is more was a strong message with more new advances in skin tightening devices the need for over filling the face or freezing it with toxin is no more and so out of vogue,  thank god as here at Renew Clinic we have always championed this philosophy. There was also an emphases placed on clear youthful looking skin and what ingredients should be used to achieve this. As always vitamin A (retinol) is a hero ingredient and the higher the dose the better according to Dr Zein Obagi who gave an inspirational lecture on skin health and how to achieve it.

ZO skincare
Vitamin C was another key factor to protect against sun damage, reduce inflammation and allow the skins DNA to reproduce healthy skin cells. Correcting the barrier function of the skin is vital to lock in the skins natural hydration through the use of key antioxidants is another step we must add to our skin care regime. Removing oil from the skin and dead skin cells is important to create a base onto which we apply our skin ingredients so that they can be absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin where they are needed to create collagen.

Based on all we learned at FACE we at Renew Clinic we have developed a simple but effective 4 step skin program for your skin…

1. Remove oil and dead skin cell through active cleanser and Scrub am/pm
2. Activate collagen production & repair skin damage with Vitamin A in the pm
3. Repair barrier function with antioxidant & vitamins C in the am
4. Give added sun protection with oil free SPF.

This simple routine will dramatically improve the feel and texture of your skin. Feel free to book a skin consultation with our nurses at renew clinic to learn more and improve your skin.

Face

We are off to the annual FACE conference in London this week. We are super excited to attend this premier aesthetic conference again!

Looking forward to seeing the leading minds in Aesthetics, discuss new treatments, techniques and products. We are particularly looking forward to catching up with all our colleagues, old and new including Dr. Rachael Eckel and Dr. John Quinn.

We will be excited to bring our new knowledge back to the clinic and sharing with all our lovely clients!

We all know that ageing skin is more than just years on the calendar. Exposure to environmental elements such as sunlight, smoke and general air pollution can lead to photo ageing in skin which results in lines, wrinkles and discolouration in skin. Prevention programmes can help reduce this damage. Studies show that sunscreen alone will give about 55% protection, adding in antioxidant to your daily routine will increase that to approximately 90% protection from environmental damage.

Antioxidants - Renew Clinic

SkinCeuticals full range of antioxidants are considered gold standard in protecting the skin against environmental damage.

Platelet rich plasma has long been used in orthopaedic medicine, dentistry and reconstructive surgery. The benefits are now widely applied to other fields of medicine, such as dermatology, skin wound healing and cosmetic facial rejuvenation. Unlike fillers, that “fill” an area/wrinkle, PRP stimulates your own collagen to grow for total rejuvenation. Can be used very effectively with facial fillers, depending on clients requirements.

What is it?

Platelet rich Plasma or PRP is a natural product created from your own body. A small amount of blood is drawn from you, placed in a sterile tube and spun to separate the different components. Blood cells are separated from the plasma-this plasma contains higher number of platelets and it is this platelet rich plasma that is ready for use.

How does it work?

Platelets are the cells in the blood that help tissue heal and grow new cells. The PRP, injected into specific areas of the skin, promotes your own collagen production, regenerates tissue and in turn naturally smooths and tightens skin. It softens wrinkles and creates smoother skin texture and tone.

Benefits:

Volumising , plumping. Excellent for softening under eye hollows, improves skin tone, tightness and texture. Softening of fine lines and wrinkles. Can be used on all areas of face, neck and chest. Results can been seen from 4-6 weeks after first treatment. Recommended course of treatments 3-6 with 6 week intervals.

Courteney Cox’s latest appearance at the Ivor Novello Awards in London had many speculating that she has finally succumbed to the knife, after admitting she has always been ‘open’ to prolonging the inevitable.

The actress is engaged again to Irish musician Johnny McDaid, after a brief split, but said that he is not a fan of the ‘Hollywood look’ and prefers a more natural appearance.

However, while she has confessed to getting botox she insisted she would never resort to surgery.

She told Closer magazine: ‘It’s no secret I’ve had some Botox in the past, but I won’t go under the knife.

‘Johnny isn’t into that whole Hollywood look anyway, so I don’t feel pressure to keep looking like a 20-year-old for him.’

Courtney Cox loves Ultherapy

Instead, Courteney claims she’s a fan of alternative treatments to help turn back the clock.

‘I’m a big laser believer. I really think they are the wave of the future,’ she added.

‘I just did Ulthera, which is supposed to produce collagen, and I’m about to do Fraxel, which will get rid of all these brown spots off my arms, chest and face.’

If you are interested in the Ultherapy treatment and would like to book a consultation or a treatment with Dr. Quinn please contact Martina in our Dublin clinic on 016619261 or email us at info@renewclinic.ie  or or book online at your own convenience
