Why more women are getting colonics…for great skin
Sunday Business Post: The bottom line
“A colonic irrigation treatment by Gallagher involves a biology and nutrition lesson too, as the nurse explains the workings of the colon and why it is important to keep it operating regularly.”
Lately we’ve been hearing from more and more women that their glowing skin isn’t just about the radiance-boosting skin-care serums they’re slathering on—it’s the result of paying attention to a rather different organ.
We’re talking about colonics (and your back door). Practitioners and devotees say that regular sessions with the hose have cleared up their acne, psoriasis, and eczema, and even a single session can produce a glow.
That’s what happened for a New York publicist we’ll call Walden White. After going to a destination spa where colonics were part of the detox cleanse program, “I noticed a healthier glow to my skin,” she recalls. “I also attributed it to the tan I got. But I trusted others when they commented on how bright my skin looked.” She’s been getting them regularly back home in New York ever since.
Michelle Goldblum, the founder and CEO of a design and marketing agency, had a similar experience after having colonics as part of a cleanse last summer. After a few weekly sessions (along with time in the infrared sauna and the healthy diet), she says, “The results were astounding. By removing all of the toxins from my system and replacing them with essential nutrients, my skin started to glow. It was obvious. People commented and questioned what I was using on my skin. I told them the only reason why my skin looked this way was because of the detox—because of the removal of all of the shit (literally!) from my system.”
But Arul Goldman, founder of the SanaVita Center for Holistic Cleansing in Gramercy Park, says that you don’t need to do a full-on detox to get the results: “Even a person eliminating once a day can get a colonic and have that euphoria, lightness and glowing skin.” She likens the effect to a great cardio workout.
Glow like you do after SoulCycle?
Goldman’s explanation is that “Any fecal matter in the body is toxic, is a poison. It’s like a bag of trash in the summer that’s starting to ferment. That happens in the intestines, and then the toxins sink though the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream. And from there, the skin is the largest organic of elimination, so if you’re at all toxic, it’s going to show up there.” (Studies have suggested otherwise, but that’s not stopping clients.)
Tracy Piper, who directs the Piper Center for Internal Wellness in Soho, makes a similar case. “What happens in the colon is directly seen in the skin,” she says. “So when I see a person with chronic acne, to me they are pooping through their skin. That may sound harsh, but it will give people a wake up call as to pay attention to what is going in inside will show on the outside…. The skin is the organ that we see that tells us if we are internally fit, so pay attention as it can save you from longstanding issues later on.”
Both practitioners say that generally healthy clients with decent skin and good natural elimination (AKA you “go” often on your own) can see a glow after one session, but to clear up a chronic condition will take more of an investment; Piper recommends at least three sessions close together (once a week), along with—not coincidentally— an elimination diet sans dairy, processed food, sugar, and gluten.
And just as the skin is the first place trouble can appear, says Piper, it’s an early place for improvement: “When you detox, the first place you see the results is in the skin. The color changes, there is a glow, a vibrancy that emits from the skin. It motivates you to take better care of yourself.” And maybe hit the hose in addition to the beauty counter.

It’s nearly the middle of January (thank god!) and most of us have either started or are attempting to start our New Years detox! I started with great gusto, surprising all the girls on my first day back to work requesting a colonic the minute I saw a free space in the diary! Yes a colonic I hear you say but honestly I felt great after it and my new year resolution is to complete my course of 3 close together to get the most out of it and to have one twice a year to keep on top of things! I’ve also joined a gym and have stopped having 3 bars of chololate a day so I think I’m on the right road but have a lot more to do before I bare my body this summer!!!
Colonic irrigation is really popular at our clinic especially at this time of year and with Gywneth Paltrow raving about detoxing with colonic the appointments are flying out the door. Jack Osbourne is also a big fan and always mentioning his fondness of colonics! I said I would put together the most popular Q&A’s to give you a bit more information before you psych yourself up to having one so here it goes.
What are the benefits of having colonic irrigation?
There are several benefits and a lot depends on how your bowels function. If you go to the toilet regularly you will be cleansing from the inside out, stimulating the bowel to remove any unwanted waste and therefore you speed up your metabolism and kick start your system to function properly. It’s will give you more energy (I went into a mad cleaning frenzy the last time I did it!) help you sleep better, brighten up your skin and eyes and initially help you lose a few pounds, unfortunately it is short lived if you run out the door to Mc Donald’s but you will lose the bloated tummy! If you suffer with constipation, diarrhoea and bloating colonics will help to regulate the large intestine, clear out any unwanted waste and stimulates the colon into functioning properly. So whatever your complaints a colonic will help.
Is it painful?
No, it’s not painful, it’s a bit cringy and slightly uncomfortable but once the tube is passed that’s the worst bit over and that only takes about 2 seconds! Sometimes you can get cramps in your stomach while having the treatment done but this means the bowel is being stimulated so it’s a good sign.
Do I need to go to the toilet straight away after it’s finished.
Yes generally you will need to go to the toilet immediately after. In Renew we have a toilet in the room so you don’t need to be running down the corridor for dear life trying to get to the toilet!
Where does all the waste go?
Don’t panic, it’s all contained in a tube and goes into our sewerage system, you don’t have to see anything if you don’t want to, mind you toward the end of the treatment people are generally craning their necks to have a peek!
How many treatments do I need?
For optimal results we recommend you do 3 sessions a week apart but we always say get through the first one and then we can chat about doing more. The reason for the 3 is that you tend to only reach the sigmoid colon on the first treatment and you need to get around the whole large intestine for best results.
How long does the treatment last?
It lasts 30 minute for the actual colonic but the nurse will take a full medical history and go through the procedure in detail and give you some dietary advice so for the first treatment it takes an hour.
Do I need to do anything before the treatment?
We would see the die hards that have been doing liver cleanses etc (what you may ask, that’s for another day!) but all we advise is that you don’t eat for a couple of hours prior to the treatment and you drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated.
Do I need to do anything after the treatment.
We recommend you take acidophilus (pro-biotic) for two weeks after the treatment. This helps to replenish the good bacteria that may have been depleted in the treatment. Also after it drink plenty of water and don’t have a big heavy meal, you will just be clogging up the system immediately after it
Hope this helps and you feel a little bit more informed and not as scared, remember we are all NURSES here at RENEW so you are in safe hands.
Please feel free to come in for a free consultation and don’t hesitate to ask any other question’s……think after writing this I’m sufficiently psyched up for my next one ahhhhhhh!

Below is one of our customers reviews on her Colonic experience.
After months of feeling bloated and sluggish with a distended stomach, cramps and gas, I finally called Renew and booked myself in for an appointment for a Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment!
The very friendly and informative receptionist answered my queries and booked me in on a date that suited me perfectly. The morning of my treatment arrived. Admittedly I was apprehensive, but I knew I was in good hands at Renew as all treatments are carried out by a registered colonic hydrotherapy nurse. I met Aisling, one of the nurses and she made me feel completely at ease. She dissected the consultation form with me and gave great advice on dietary and nutritional changes that would improve my digestive system.
Then up to the Colonic room for treatment, Aisling left me to get ready making sure I was as comfortable as possible. I was covered with a towel to keep some modesty and the tube was inserted, I felt some slight discomfort at first as it was a new sensation. During the treatment the nurse talked me through the whole process as to what was happening. She explained the “filling” stage to me and she allowed water gently into my bowels. I didn’t feel any pain at all during my treatment, I could feel the water filling up inside of me, but because of the gentle in-and-out flow of the water, it wasn’t bad at all. The nurse then emptied the tubing through a closed system when I felt pressure in my tummy. Several flushes later I began to get as “used” to the sensation as much as I could.
I was so curious as to what was going through the tubing as I felt I wasn’t in control of what was being evacuated!! Aisling informed me that some hard stools had passed and further treatments would be needed. She recommended coming in for a course of 3 sessions a week apart as one colonic would remove some of the stagnant waste in the colon. The second and subsequent colonics will remove more. After the treatment Aisling recommended taking acidophilus for two weeks following the treatments to replace the good bacteria and replenish the digestive system.
The next day I felt great, I felt lighter, less bloated and had tons of energy! After the third treatment the improvement was amazing and the changes to my diet were simple and sustainable. I no longer feel tired, sluggish and bloated, I am back to myself! I have heard so many people complain about stomach problems and I have recommended Renew to several of friends and family. I just wish I had of done it years ago!
