Shedding Light on Rosacea: April is Rosacea Awareness Month

15 April 2025

April is Rosacea Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating the public, supporting those living with rosacea, and reducing the stigma surrounding this often-overlooked skin condition. While rosacea affects over 16 million people worldwide, many people still misunderstand what it is—and more importantly, how it can be managed.

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects the face. It's characterized by persistent redness, visible blood vessels, bumps, and sometimes even eye irritation. While it can affect anyone, rosacea is most seen in people over the age of 30 with fair skin, though it can appear in all skin tones and ages.

Rosacea often flares up in cycles, with triggers ranging from stress, spicy foods, alcohol, and extreme temperatures to certain skincare products or environmental factors.

Why Awareness Matters

Despite how common it is, rosacea is frequently misdiagnosed or mistaken for acne, eczema, or even just sensitive skin. This can lead to ineffective treatment and worsening of symptoms. Awareness empowers people to seek the right treatments and skincare!

If you live with rosacea, you're probably familiar with the constant battle against redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels that just won’t quit. While there’s no known cure for rosacea, there are innovative treatments that can help manage the symptoms—and one of the most promising is Intense Pulsed Light therapy, or IPL.

How Does IPL Work for Rosacea?

IPL delivers controlled pulses of light into the skin, which are absorbed by the haemoglobin in dilated blood vessels—a common symptom of rosacea. This light energy is converted into heat, causing the blood vessels to collapse and be naturally reabsorbed by the body over time. Unlike lasers, which use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses multiple wavelengths—allowing it to treat larger areas of skin in less time with minimal discomfort.

What to Expect During IPL Treatment

Consultation first: A skin therapist at Renew will assess your rosacea and determine if you're a good candidate.

Quick sessions: Most IPL treatments last about 20–30 minutes.

Mild sensation: Clients often describe the feeling as a warm snap, like a rubber band on the skin.

No downtime: You might experience some temporary redness or mild swelling, but most people return to their daily routine immediately.

For rosacea, a series of 3–6 treatments spaced about 3–4 weeks apart is usually recommended for best results.

IPL is available at Renew Skin Clinic Dublin, Naas and Drogheda
